It's one of the most splendid ironies of humanity that we dig deep into the soil of exhausted civilizations to see our future and look high into the universe to see our past.

It’s gratifying to see the Times publishing articles such as this — that portray everyday, contemporary Greece in as the forward-looking nation that it truly is. Like any nation, Greece has its challenges. However Greece is, in many ways, creatively grappling with and overcoming these challenges. This proves, once again, that the blood that animated Ancient Greece still courses through the veins of Hellenes today.
As the 3rd century B.C. rhetorician Isocrates pointed out definitively ("He is Greek who wants to be Greek"), Hellenism had nothing to do with "blood" and everything to do with culture. Still does. Ask Giannis Antentokounpo.
@Friend Sadly, presentism is nothing new. Every generation interprets the past to suit the present.
Even the Greeks when encountering dinosaur bones saw the Titans of their mythology.
Not all scholars certainly. Yet it's challenging for any human to resist applying a definitive interpretation to everything that puzzles them. And, with archeology, they've been later proven almost invariably wrong as technology develops.
But don't fret. Current archeology preserves context and artifacts. Subsequent generations will no doubt approach them quite differently and better armed.
